Making Stuff

I was sitting at the breakfast table with my father, everyone else in the house was still asleep, and the Big Guy was at work. We were talking, and I realized I needed something to do with my hands.

I got a box of ornaments and some paint and started making a few presents for people who are coming over, and I suddenly realized what it was. Today, the first day of the new year, is also the first day in a long time when I haven’t had any large meals to prepare or children to drive somewhere or even the nagging feeling that something is going on at work but I need to check in on.

Suddenly there was the space where everything, at least inside our kitchen, was right with the world. The need to make something wasn’t just nervous energy looking for an outlet, it was a creative spark turning into an ember as the blustery New Year’s day fanned it into a full fledged flame.
